Online Reputation

Dear Brittany,

I enjoyed our conversation the other day and wanted to find out more information about you and what you’re associated. When I typed your name in Google I came up with over 1,400,000 results so I narrowed it down by typing your name and associating it with Utah State University. There were 170,000 results still. Here are some of the links that I believe you may be associated with.

http://www.facebook.com/posted.php?id=63442571071

I pulled up some of these links hoping to find out more information about you but didn’t find out a lot. What I did discover is that you are actively associated with the Public Relations Student Society of America at Utah State University. I also noticed that you did a lot of work for the Attorney General of Utah’s visit to USU. You were quoted in a news article and I also noticed you supporting these and other public relations groups. I noticed through your twitter account that you support the Social Media Club Cache Valley which I am also a member of. Maybe I will have the pleasure of your company more often than I originally anticipated.

I knew it was going to be difficult to find any information about you because your name is common but I was pleasantly surprised that I found out any information at all. It seems like you have a great online reputation with the PRSSA and with the Journalism and Communications department at Utah State University. I look forward to seeing you again.

Thanks Brittany,

According to Bankrate, Mortgage Rates Set Record Low

The average 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 5.00 percent and the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has an average of 0.44 discount and origination points. These rates are significantly lower than the rates this time last year. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate last year was 5.92 percent meaning a $200,000 loan would have a monthly payment of $1188.83 but now its $1073.64 saving $115 a month for homeowner refinancing.

I’m curious about whether or not this is actually a good thing. I think a lot of leaders in America have tried to “fix” thing but have only made them worse. I don’t know if this lower rate will allow or encourage those who are not going to be able to make good on their loans, to refinance. Will it eventually leak down and hurt the entire American society just like the real estate market did to start the domino effect of the economy a couple of years ago. I certainly hope this has a positive effect and we can start climbing out of the hole we are in.

2010 Impreza introduced by Subaru

The Impreza is being introduced in the Los Angeles Auto Show on December 4-13. Subaru has a hybrid tourer concept that shows a possible future for hybrid technology. The technology is being used to highlight Subaru’s announcement that it will develop a gas/electric hybrid system based on Subaru’s boxer engine and should launch in 2012. A flat floor design increases leg room for rear seat passengers and open spaces surrounding the occupants creates a more comfortable design of Subaru.

Even though many dealerships are struggling I think that Subaru’s are flourishing because they are economically friendly. Subaru’s were the best-selling cars in Utah last year. I hope they will be able to keep up their momentum if they introduce more expensive and luxurious cars.

Duracell Smart Power Lab Collects Power

A new Duracell Smart Power Lab opened on November 23, 2009 and is free to the public in New York’s Time Square. The goal is to pedal enough to generate approximately 32,000 watt hours to power the ionic 2010 for 30 minutes during New Year’s Eve ball drop ceremony in NYC. "The countdown to New Year's has begun! Our partnership with the public to light up 2010 is a larger than life symbol of our commitment to do what we do best - delivering power when people need it most," said Craig Bida, Duracell Brand Manager.

I completely support this idea. I think that is really cool actually. Many people use energy to power their work out equipment but if they could work out and create power wouldn’t that benefit all of society? I think they should make Smart Power Labs all around the country. Even if they just use it as a free work out gym and Duracell capitalizes on all the energy collected it would be beneficial for society. I think it’s a cool idea.

“The Who” are to perform at the Superbowl XLIV Halftime Show

The Who will be seen by one of the largest televised audiences in history when they perform at the halftime show in the Superbowl on February 7, 2010. The Bridgestone halftime show is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year. Last year’s show was viewed by more than 151 million viewers in the US. It will be broadcasted in more than 230 countries or territories worldwide this year. They will be performing some of their classical hits as well as newer songs.

I always hear about The Who but I have never heard them play. I get the idea that The Who is one of those old rock bands that many of the older generation know but not the younger. Though I think its great publicity for The Who to play at the halftime show because it will reach out to my generation more. I guarantee they will be much more popular after their performance.

A Tribute at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel

Employees and families came together to pay tribute to 31 lives that were lost in a terrorist act one year ago. A permanent memorial was unveiled at the hotel to remember and pay homage to those who lost their lives. Mr. Ratan N Tata - Chairman, Indian Hotels Company Ltd. said, "I consider this a great privilege to be here today as we recognize, pay tribute and memorialize to those we lost both at the hotel and in the city. We made a commitment to rebuild this building brick by brick and stone by stone and this commitment still stands. They tried to knock us down but they could not kill us. The attack did not scare us but it made us stronger. We have risen again stronger with greater spirit" The hotel plans to reopen in following months.

I feel really unaware of the world. I either didn’t remember or realize what happened at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel a year ago. If I understand
correctly a terrorist act occurred which I assume was a bombing because they mentioned reconstructing the building. For those like me who have not been paying attention to events in the world as well as they should, I think stories like this should give a small background of what happened to cause the memorial.

Black Friday Shopping

Retailers tried to entice consumers by having incentives such as: aggressive pricing, free shipping, and free accessories with a purchase. Pricegrabber.com recently had a holiday survey which revealed 45 percent of consumers were planning to shop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The top ten most popular items this holiday season include:

1. Wii Console
2. nuvi 265WT GPS
3. Apple iPod touch 8GB
4. D90 SLR Digital Camera Kit
5. Digital Rebel XSI 12MP Black Digital SLR Camera w/ Kit
6. nuvi 765T GPS
7. Wii Fit
8. Apple iPod touch 16GB
9. nuvi 255W Wide-Screen Automotive GPS
10. Nintendo® DS Limited Edition Pokemon Pack

The majority of the sought after items for this holiday are fairly expensive. I’m surprised with this economy that people are still willing to spend large amounts of money like that. I’m interested to see if retailers do as well this season as they have done in previous seasons.

Almost Half a Million US Teens Use Steroids

Hall of famer and professional football player Dick Butkus is raising awareness of steroid use by offering easy access to anti-steroid educational material to coaches. One third of the teen steroid use in the US is by females. Both genders feel the harmful side effect including liver damage, enlarged male breasts, stunted growth and suicidal tendencies. Butkus has teamed together with Old Spice and has created an I Play Clean program. This program teaches teenagers that they don’t need steroids to excel in athletics.

I support what Butkus is doing. Teenagers are so pressured to do well in everything they do especially athletics. Steroids seem to be more easily accessible than most US citizens realize. I think it would be wise for coaches to educate their athletes.

Group Prospectus Letter Rough Draft

Paula F. Downey
President
American Automobile Association
5705 S Harrison Blvd
Ogden, UT 84403

Dear Paula Downey,

Part One:
I am a member of America Services PR which is a growing non-profit organization specializing in creating public service announcements. America Services PR has been campaigning for revolutionizing views on texting and driving. We want to invite you to be a part of this by sponsoring us $2 million to create and air an influential memorable PSA. This will benefit you by advertising for you while encouraging a good cause.

Part Two:
AAA is the first company we have asked to be a part of this campaign because of its advocacy in car and traffic safety. You’re previous sponsorships for the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Visa allow for advertising but sponsoring a PSA will get AAA nationally recognized and encourages something more closely related to the mission of AAA. When sponsoring our PSA you will say to customers and to the nation that the association is trying to prevent tragedies instead of just cleaning up after them. We see this from your mission statement which states, "To promote health care policies that ensure excellence in the ambulance services industry and provide research, education and communications programs to enable its members to effectively address the needs of the communities they serve." AAA serves more than 75% of the US population so the reputation of the association is important and can have a much larger impact on citizens than a less prominent company.

Part Three:
The current problem that we both face is texting and driving. Eighty percent of all crashes in the US are caused by distracted driving. We found that almost 50 percent of all drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 text and drive. Each year, 21 percent of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4 percent every year. Educating the public on the risk and results that texting and driving causes it would be exponentially beneficial for AAA. Prevention of car accidents would decrease money AAA spends on responding to these accidents and result in an increase of revenue for the association. By sponsoring our PSA, the association will be striving to its end goal which is to serve and educate the US population. There are too many drivers who do not understand the repercussions of texting and driving and the public ought to be more aware of the dangers of distracted driving.

Part Four:
Our approach to this problem of texting and driving is to educate the public by creating a bold televised PSA. The PSA storyboard we have created shows a newly married couple driving when the driver begins to text and drifts off the road. They have a head on collision and results in a multiple car accident. We want to show the consequences of distracted driving in a manner that will stick in driver’s minds and cause them to think twice before texting and driving. We also want to create a radio PSA that is short and simple but pulls at heartstrings as it tells the story of a death caused by distracted driving. The radio PSA we believe will be effective because drivers will hear it while they are in the car already. It will be more of an instantaneous reminder. This will help close the gap between how drivers think of texting and driving now and how they should think about it.

Part Five:
My organization is the most promising for this campaign because of previous experiences we have had with successful PSAs. An example of a previous PSA America Services PR contributed in would be the United Kingdom’s Texting While Driving PSA. It was shown in schools as part of a 30 minute deterrent workshop for texting and driving. We have received the desired feedback for the PSA. It described as “effective, violent and bloody”. America Services PR would like to use similar tactics on a PSA for the United States which will likely have the same results as the United Kingdom. One of the members of America Services PR worked side by side directing many PSAs and knows what graphic elements are needed to give the most impact. For the UK PSA we worked with skilled stuntmen and cameramen. America Services PR has built a relationship with these companies and we have already discussed terms for creating a PSA. They have given us a generous offer which would put your sponsored dollars to the best use. We plan on using this PSA on television in the evening so adults and teenagers will be able to watch it. The PSA we also believe will be most effective if shown in Driver’s Education classes. It would also be beneficial to show this PSA at the Department of Motor Vehicles so while people are bored waiting they will be educated.

Part Six:
Like I previously stated we are asking for AAA to sponsor America Services PR $2 million. We broke down the costs of everything. The estimated amount of money needed to create a multi-car crash is $500 thousand in parts. The cameramen gave us a deal of $150 thousand. Stuntmen will cost around $100 thousand as well. For special effects a team estimated $200 thousand. We then wanted to run the PSA during the evenings which estimates to $1 million for advertising time. Lastly we wanted $50 thousand to distribute the PSA to schools and DMVs. If it is more appealing to AAA we have considered splitting a sponsorship with other companies with similar goals or relations such as Allstate Insurance. The audience reached and impact this PSA will have is limitless so we would like to give AAA the opportunity first to decide if it’s worth splitting sponsorship or if the association wants to be solely recognized for this PSA.

Part Seven:
America Services PR plans on starting filming January 2010 and airing the PSA in March. In order to accomplish this goal we need to know your interest by December 15, 2009. If more details are requested please use the information below to contact me. Thank you for your time. We will hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Amanda Running

Oprah Winfrey Announces New Network

Oprah Winfrey announced on November 20, 2009 that she is implementing a new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The network is designed to inform, entertain, and inspire people to live their best lives. OWN will premier in January 2010 on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel. Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav said, "There is no bigger brand in media than Oprah Winfrey. She has changed the broadcast landscape and how people consume television. Along the way, she impacted our culture and touched us all. We congratulate her and our friends at Harpo for their many achievements, and their years of creating truly ground-breaking television. Discovery Communications has a tremendous partner in Oprah, and we look forward to bringing her and her creative vision, programming and unique voice to approximately 80 million homes on OWN, as well as online through the award-winning Oprah.com."

I think that is an enormous feat for Oprah to take on. Very rarely does one person own a network let alone a famous one named after oneself. I do find it a little much though. People basically worship her and I’m not so fond of that. I’m curious to see if Oprah’s influence will reach even further.

Microsoft Annual Shareholder Meeting Outlines Growth Agenda

Microsoft has sold over twice as many Windows 7 operating systems than any operating system they’ve ever launched in comparable time. "Windows 7 is the simply best PC operating system we have ever built," Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said. "It enables people to do more of what they want to do more easily and more quickly, and customers are responding.

I think it’s amazing that Microsoft is growing and selling more than ever before with this economy. It makes me curious at what strategies Microsoft is implementing that other companies are not. I am considering looking further into this. I still forget that Bill Gates is not the C.E.O. of Microsoft any longer but Steve Ballmer is. This is a company that it would be wise to invest in. I definitely think I’m going to keep track of them.

Portion of T.G.I. Friday’s Thanksgiving Sales in Texas are to be Donated to Assist Fort Hood Community

Five percent of net sales from Thanksgiving are to be donated from all 50 Texas restaurants to the United Service Organizations to assist the Fort Hood Community which lost 13 loved ones in the events of November 5. "Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families of the fallen, the dozens who were wounded and all of those who serve and live at Fort Hood not only on Thanksgiving, but every day." said President and Chief Operator John Neitzel.

I feel out of the loop. I had no idea what tragedy happened on November 5 so I looked it up. There was a shooting which killed over a dozen people and injured over thirty. The shooting was on a military base and is considered the deadliest rampage at a U.S. Military Base in history. I am getting really sick of people losing control and just shooting multiple people. Is it just me or does it seem to be happening more frequently than it did in other decades?

Toys ‘R Us Stores Open Midnight on Black Friday

Five extra hours of shopping are available to Toys ‘R Us customers on Black Friday. There will be more than 70 doorbusters available between midnight and 1 p.m. Toys ‘R Us will be giving out 250 thousand Crayola 64 Boxes for free with any purchase."We're raising the bar on Black Friday savings opportunities by expanding our store hours, offering the most sought-after toys in-stock when parents want them, and - of course - delivering outstanding values on items to fit any budget," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc.

Truthfully I find it a little pathetic that they have to bribe people with free crayons. Of all things crayons. I can imagine this being very successful though. With door busters and people’s ability to stay up late better than wake up early this I believe will prove to be worth it. The public goes nuts over things like this which I also find a little pathetic. It reminds me of previous years where people were killed in a stampede of people on Black Friday. I wonder if stores like Toys ‘R Us take any precautions against that.

Steve Harvey and Walt Disney World Resort Inspire Teens Through Disney’s Dreamers Academy 2010.

One hundred high school students around the nation were chosen to attend an innovative learning environment at the Walt Disney World Resort. The program will take place February 11-14, 2010. During the program the students will participate in interactive workshops on Imagineering techniques, entertainment, the business of sports, culinary arts and more. Disney cast members, executives and celebrities will give tips on success.

This seems like an interesting program. It reminds me a lot of Willy Wonka actually. It’s a magical world that select people get to experience. I think that Disney has a lot to offer students and this would be a prime learning experience.

Proctor and Gamble Voluntarily Recall Products

P&G announced that it is voluntarily recalling three lots of its Vicks Sinex nasal spray in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. The company is taking this cautionary step because bacteria B. cepacia was found in a small amount in its products in a plant in Germany. The bacteria could cause serious infection to those with a vulnerable immune system or with chronic lung conditions. There have been no reported illnesses thus far.

I respect this country actually for finding a problem in their plant and recognizing the problems it could have. They didn’t wait to be disciplined or prodded by the health organizations to recall the product. It makes me feel more confident in the company instead of nervous because their product needs to be recalled. I feel like the company truly wants to provide a quality product.

On December 21, 2009 Eminem is to Release New Album: Relapse

Eminem’s album holds seven bonus tracks and five never-before-heard tracks. Eminem said, “I got back in with Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch. The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on Relapse 2, but I still want the other stuff to be heard." Relapse 2 will be released next year.

I thought it was interesting how Eminem is now known as a Hip-hop artist. At the beginning of his music career he was known as a rapper. This kind of shows me how much an industry can influence and change things. It encourages me to hold strong to my dreams and identity without being too stubborn to make necessary changes. It makes me wonder what Eminem thinks about this label.

Steps I took:

1. I used the cropping tool to get the section I wanted.
2. I created another layer.
3. I went to Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Hue Saturation. I pressed colorize and chose black and white.
4. I created another layer and did the same thing but made the reds more intense.
5. I then used the text tool to write "Halloween 2009"
6. I used the brush tool and zoomed in to make the eyes look darker and more defined.

These are the steps I used to do this.

1. I went to the cropping tool and cut out everything I didn't want.
2. I created a new layer by dragging the picture to the sticky note pad.
3. I next went to Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Hue Saturation. Then I colorized it and made the layer black and white.
4. Next put the black and white layer under the colored layer and erased from the colored.
5. I used the cloning stamp tool on the left to take away the shadow of our jump.
6. Finally I added "Mexican Cruise" to it by using the text tool.

AirTran Airways Advertise on Seat Backs

In addition to seat pocket advertising, advertising on catering items such as napkins, and flight attendant announcements, AirTran Airways announced today that they plan on outfitting all of their jets with seat back advertising. Unlike the other forms of advertisements on the jets the seat back advertising will be fully visible to passengers throughout the entire flight which could be anywhere from 40 minutes to several hours.

I think that this is kind of ridiculous. We are getting more and more cluttered. I would like to go on an airplane and not feel like I’m being bombarded with advertisements. Even if they are offering cruise packages, and other supposedly valuable things to passengers, there are other ways to get those messages across. I’m not so fond of this idea.

IBM is Close to Creating a Computer Based on Insights From the Brain

Significant progress has been made toward creating a supercomputer system that can emulate the brain’s abilities of perception, sensation, cognition, interaction and action. "As the digital and physical worlds continue to merge and computing becomes more embedded in the fabric of our daily lives, it's imperative that we create a more intelligent computing system that can help us make sense the vast amount of information that's increasingly available to us, much the way our brains can quickly interpret and act on complex tasks." Said Josephine Cheng-lab director of IBM research.

This computer system it seems we have been slow in progressing. Ideas have been around for decades about supercomputers that can do the things IBM is working on. I understand the difficulties of it but at this point it almost seems like old news. Many movies have used this idea and introduced concerns with it. For example in Eagle Eye a supercomputer does what it’s programmed to do almost too well. The machine then is greater than the man. I have a difficult time believing that will ever occur. I’m excited to see what a difference this technology can make when it is finally introduced to the public.

The Postal Service Ends 2009 With $3.8 Billion Loss

United States Postal Service had one of the most difficult years in postal service history. They will file their 2010 Integrated Financial Plan later this week that will outline the goals for the coming year. In 2009 the operating revenue was $68.1 billion compared to $74.9 billion in 2008. USPS had a net loss of $3.8 billion compared with 2008 net loss of $2.8 billion. Forty thousand careers were reduced. "We're grateful to Congress and the Administration for the necessary 2009 adjustment to our retiree health payment," said Postmaster General John Potter. "This was a welcome and much-needed change to assure that the Postal Service was able to meet all of its obligations at the end of the fiscal year and over the course of 2010.

At first I wasn’t sure how the USPS could be suffering in this recession but I believe the factors to why the postal service is losing money isn’t dependent on the recession. I think a large contributing factor is that it is less expensive to send electronic copies of things. People are also becoming more aware of the environment and not wasting its resources.

I think it’s amazing that so much time could be spent blogging and it makes me curious how much time I spend blogging every week. We are living in such a virtual world that it amazes me how much impact is made in business through social media.

Krebs: Reading Four

It’s my Virtual World and Welcome to It

This new virtual world can be entered at www.secondlife.com A player in Second Life navigates space through an avatar. You can run, fly or even teleport. Anything is possible in this world. Unlike other online role playing games, Second Life isn’t really a game. The goal is to interact with millions of other residents. Brand name clothing creates stores within Second Life to get their brand out there. You can create different things to sell from ice cream cones to clothing by using small basic shapes called prisms.

I thought this was so bizarre. It reminds me in a way of SIMS because it doesn’t seem to have an end. Although it would be interesting to be able to create a life that you chose virtually, I think it would either become boring or end up taking up too much time. It’s not wise to put your life so much into a game.

My Virtual Life

Second Life continues. What’s amazing about this new technology is that you can actually earn real U.S. Currency while playing with Linden dollars. Three hundred Linden dollars are equal to one U.S. dollar. People have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars on Second Life. Second Life is different than other video games because unlike other games, you create everything around you. Whatever you can imagine you can create.

I think that Second Life is encouraging creativity and could be a new and successful way to communicate and share ideas across the world but I once again think there are concerns with this technology. Online games have been compared to golf, where business partners will meet online to play games instead of golfing. The problem I believe with all of these games is taking away face to face interaction. I believe face to face interaction is a very valuable part of society that continues to decline. I’m curious to see if Second Life has a large impact, whether for positive or negative.

A deluxe version which includes her new album and her debut album “The Fame”. 3. A collector’s edition super-deluxe art book version, which includes both albums, fanzines, 3D glasses, paper dolls, a puzzle, pictorials, and a lock of Lady Gaga’s hair.

Standard and deluxe versions will be available November 23 and the collector’s album will be available December 15. Lady Gaga is the first artist to chart four #1 hits at Top 40 Radio –“Just Dance”, “Pokerface”, “LoveGame”, and “Paparazzi”. She will perform her next hit “Bad Romance” on the American Music Awards on November 22, 2009.

It amazes me that Lady Gaga has climbed to fame so quickly. It’s been about a year and she has jumped to one of the best female artists of our time. I’m not so sure that she’s someone I can respect though. Her videos are basically pornographic. Who knows if Lady Gaga even has limits.

2. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
3. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009)
4. The Dark Knight (2008)
5. Twilight (2008)

New Moon is the year’s most anticipated film. From a recent Fandango survey 98% say that the action in New Moon looks better than the action in Twilight. Ten percent plan on showing up at the premier in costume. New Moon premiers on November 20th.

I think this movie looks more promising than the other Twilight movie but I also could be biased because I think Taylor Lautner, who plays the character of Jacob is very attractive. That might be some reason why the movie is so anticipated as well. I think it is a little ridiculous though that this movie has had more advanced ticket sales then the other movies. Those movies seemed to be less juvenile.

Deloitte Consumer Spending Index Looks Positive

"The continued rise in the Index points to a significant improvement in the fundamentals of household financials," said Carl Steidtmann, chief economist with Deloitte Research. The negative Real-Estate market’s effects have decreased in recent months. Initial unemployment claims are falling sharply within the past three months which is a reliable sign of economic recovery.

With economic conditions looking up consumers might be encouraged to spend more but they may need an incentive to increase their spending. Retailers could possibly look at providing better services or promoting a good cause to attract consumers.

Reading this press release gave me hope. Being a college student and knowing that plenty of college graduates are having difficult times with unemployment is not encouraging. I have been very intimidated by life after graduation because of the economy. This press release was encouraging and I’m glad that it appears the economy is once again going to pick up.

NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) Makes Discovery with Lunar Crater

The LCROSS mission successfully uncovered water in a permanently shadowed lunar crater. This discovery will help us better understand the moon and possibly the development of our solar system. Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington said, “The moon harbors many secrets, and LCROSS has added a new layer to our understanding.”

The discovery of water could be more widespread and in greater quantity than previously suspected. It’s in question whether this could hold a key to the history and evolution of our solar system. LCROSS project scientist Anthony Colaprete said, “Multiple lines of evidence show water was present in both the high angle vapor plume and the ejecta curtain created by the LCROSS Centaur impact. The concentration and distribution of water and other substances requires further analysis, but it is safe to say Cabeus holds water.”

I think this is actually very exciting. To see the way science evolves and how we learn more about the solar system is intriguing. What possible questions and answers could present themselves later because of the data found through LCROSS. I can see LCROSS making so much progress that my descendents will be learning about information found through it in years to come.

Press Conference on Guantanamo Detainees

Attorney General Eric Holder announced detainees from Guantanamo Bay which may be responsible for the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11 will be charged with the U.S. Justice System. Four terrorists are being held for that and there are six others who are held for other terrorist acts such as the USS Cole bombing.

Holder announced that they will be fair and just but they are looking for the death penalty for the 9/11 terrorists. Senators Lindsay Graham, Carl Levin and John McCain have been working hard to strengthen our national security by helping pass legislation to reform the military commission system.

While I understand we need to bring justice to those who have committed a crime, I worry that emotions will be in the way with the decision on these men’s lives. While I believe what they did was wrong and they should have consequences, I don’t think that they did it because they thought they were wrong. We should provide justice without being completely biased and I think that if the U.S. justice system tried them it would be too biased. I think it might be wise to have another country involved in the hearing.

Holiday Traditions are Being Emphasized in the Recession

Many people are altering their holiday seasons and focusing more on traditions than spending money on gifts. A new consumer survey reveals that during the recession, 90percent of Americans are focused on celebrating family traditions as well as creating new ones.

According to the survey, 25 percent of Americans are planning on purchasing an artificial tree rather than a real one this year. Forty-three percent of Americans are planning on asking their guests to bring food to festivities this year to more equally distribute the cost. Spending limits on gifts are going to be implemented by 63 percent of Americans. Sears is trying to appeal to Americans by having options of giving together and other economic friendly services.

I personally think that focusing on holiday traditions might be one of the only good things that come from the recession. Families spending quality time together and creating memories is much better than the average commercialized Christmas’ that have occurred frequently in recent years. I’m excited to see Americans doing family activities such as baking, ginger bread houses, caroling and decorating the tree together.

A new Porsche Boxster Spyder is being introduced in February 2010. It is lightweight, powerful, agile and efficient. This car can go from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and has a 3.4 liter 6 cylinder engine. The price will be around $60,000.

While I understand the interest in the car because it has many prime amenities and is a beautiful car, I’m not so sure that it’s going to be successful. Not a lot of people in this economy can afford a car like this and those that could are most likely going to be more conservative with their money. I can see this being fairly unsuccessful.

Credit Card Companies Punishing Their Best Customers?

New credit card companies are adding new fees, aimed at their customers who pay their bills on time. Companies are looking for new ways to increase revenue that has been lost so they are implementing 3 new fees that will take effect in 2010.

There will be an annual fee for customers who have never had a late payment. Customers without a late payment within 12 months will be charged an annual fee of $29-$99. Another fee will be for customers who have never carried a balance on their credit card. A fee also could be charged for not using your card frequently enough. Some card companies are charging a minimum of $2400 spent each year or they will charge you a fee.

I think these new rules are absolutely ridiculous. Everyone right now is suffering with the economy and losing some revenue. Why should credit card companies get the little money that is out there right now. People are trying to not get in debt with this economy and I don’t think there is any reason to punish them for that. As a student I am trying to build up my credit so I have a student credit card. I am careful to not have any late payments because I don’t have extra money to throw around. If I get charged for being responsible with my credit card I wouldn’t have agreed to have one. I think credit card companies would have a huge decrease in their customers and would essentially hurt themselves by implementing these new fees.

Media Pitch

Meetings for the Cache Valley Area Investors Association will be held every other Thursday where anyone can learn about creating their financial independence

Editor Stanley Johnson,

You might be interested in learning more about the Cache Valley Area Investors Association. The association is located in Logan Utah. It could be beneficial for all members of the community to attend meetings and become more educated on financial independence. If you’re interested I can send you more detailed information.

The goal of the Cache Valley Area Investors Association is to help people understand how to achieve financial independence in the most effective way. This is achieved when your passive income is larger than your expenses. People can do what they love to do once they’ve become financially independent.

Meetings usually consist of a speaker who is an expert of financial independence followed by a question-answer session. The CVAIA meets every other Thursday at the Cache County Chamber of Commerce on 160 N. Main St. at 7:00p.m. The next meeting will be October 15, 2009.

Here is a possible boiler plate:

CVAIA teaches people how to increase passive income. CVAIA embraces the Law of Attraction, Law of Abundance, and Law of Exchange. They practice the methods found in the ideologies of books including Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Wealthy Barber, The Millionaire Next Door, Atlas Shrugged, The Automatic Millionaire and The Secret. CVIAIA began in August 2007 and now has members from many geographical locations and from all walks of life. The members come together with the same belief: that education mitigates the risks of investing.

If you have any questions, would like me to arrange interviews or you need additional material, feel free to contact me anytime. A website you may want to check out is www.cvaia.com Thanks for your time.

Greek Community Participates in Service Throughout Utah State University and Cache Valley
Contribute more service hours than USU’s Service Center

LOGAN, Utah – Members of the Greek Community at Utah State University search for respect from peers and the community through service. Each chapter serves by focusing on their philanthropies but comes together for all Greek service projects. Service varies from fundraising money for a local charity to empowering teenagers nationally through the Dove Campaign.

The Greek Community is trying to survive since a fraternity member died last November from alcohol poisoning. There has been a lot of criticism on the value of Greek life at USU causing Greek members to become more involved in showing the community what they are all about.

Last spring the Greek chapters were major proponents in Service Week. Greeks hosted many of the service projects and were active participants throughout the week in encouraging other students to become involved. The Greek Community provides more service hours than any other organization on-campus including the Service Center.

Members of the Greek community feel that they are now, “more inclusive on the campus as a whole,” said Kappa Delta Sorority member Corinna Gross. Gross said, “Many of the chapters require you to be an active member of at least one other organization or club. We want to be actively involved in not only our houses, but our school and community.”

Philanthropic work will be carried out by the Greek Community with hopes that other students and Logan citizens will be inspired to become involved in creating a better situation for others. Service week is an opportunity for the Greek Community to become more involved and show the world what they are really about.

Cache Valley Area Investors Association Promotes Achieving Financial Independence
Began in September 2007 and welcomes everyone

Logan, Utah-The Cache Valley Area Investors Association president, Preston Parker, strives to increase financial independence for members by increasing passive income. Financial independence is achieved when your passive income is more than your expenses. Parker said the best way to achieve financial independence is to know what it is and how to achieve it. That is one of the main goals of CVAIA.

If people learn the right mentality and approaches to investing, they can all be successful in what they desire. People should be able to spend their time doing something they love, not just a job that provides an income. Passive income largely makes this possible.

Intro to Online Journalism

Readings Two
When Google is not your Friend, The Coming Tug of War Over the Internet, and Journalism Students Need to Develop Their Personal Brand

When Google is not your friend:
http://news.cnet.com/FAQ-When-Google-is-not-your-friend/2100-1025_3-6034666.html?tag=nefd.top
This article actually surprised me a bit. I cannot imagine how much information google must hold because I alone have searched google many times. Just for keeping the records of one city would be an overwhelming job. It makes me a bit nervous though to feel like privacy is unprotected. I know that our privacy really isn’t strong anyway even with the laws holding it in place but I feel like I could more easily be manipulated by a company just through the results google collects.
I think that by storing this information it can be a really good thing or a really bad thing. The man who was almost prosecuted after his wife’s death in November because he googled words like “neck”, “snap”, “hold” and “break”. If this man is guilty the information received from his googled words could be beneficial in coming to a conclusion with the case but if the man is not guilty simple searches such as those could be for millions of things and would unfairly prosecute him.

The Coming Tug of War Over the Internet:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/21/AR2006012100094.html
Wow this article reminded me a lot about the power people have over manipulation through the internet. It basically was saying that the nations largest telephone companies can control which search engines are faster. Over time people will switch to the faster search engine and although they believe they are making these decisions for themselves it’s all a manipulative business tactic.
Many companies like Google and Yahoo are encouraging the government to make a law that ensures the telephone companies stay on neutral ground and that the best website will win. The companies do not want phone or cable companies to influence the content on our computer screen.
I would definitely have to agree with these companies. I don’t want to be manipulated like that because technically I do want to go to the fastest search engines or the better websites but I do not want that to be determined by phone or cable companies but by myself. This article got me thinking and it slightly disturbs me.

Journalism Students Need to Develop their Personal Brand:
http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2009/08/journalism-students-need-to-develop-their-personal-brand231.html
This article I agree with but I don’t feel like it’s any new information. I think it’s vital to make sure your information is out there on the web because it can determine a lot about a person and often times will create a first impression. Luckily I have this blog which has my name in the domain and I actually purchased a domain name mweventplanning.com for my future business already. I believe I am holding up what is stressed in this article.
This article also says to make sure when your name is googled that you are one of the first ten links. Fortunately for me, I have a unique name so when I go through a search engine, links connecting to me come up. Unfortunately simple pointless things like facebook and friends on facebook come up as well so it may not appear as professional.
I am hoping to soon learn more about withholding and creating a better online reputation.

Readings One
Email Etiquette and The Core Rules for Netequitte

These two internet sites have helped me learn more about what I’m doing right and what I am doing wrong when participating in this web of communication. Here’s a bit of what I have found interesting.

According to emailreplies.com there are 32 rules of etiquette that one should follow when emailing.

32 most important email etiquette tips:
1. Be concise and to the point
2. Answer all questions, and pre-empt further questions
3. Use proper spelling, grammar & punctuation
4. Make it personal
5. Use templates for frequently used responses
6. Answer swiftly
7. Do not attach unnecessary files
8. Use proper structure & layout
9. Do not overuse the high priority option
10. Do not write in CAPITALS
11. Don't leave out the message thread
12. Add disclaimers to your emails
13. Read the email before you send it
14. Do not overuse Reply to All
15. Mailings > use the bcc: field or do a mail merge
16. Take care with abbreviations and emoticons
17. Be careful with formatting
18. Take care with rich text and HTML messages
19. Do not forward chain letters
20. Do not request delivery and read receipts
21. Do not ask to recall a message.
22. Do not copy a message or attachment without permission
23. Do not use email to discuss confidential information
24. Use a meaningful subject
25. Use active instead of passive
26. Avoid using URGENT and IMPORTANT
27. Avoid long sentences
28. Don't send or forward emails containing libelous, defamatory, offensive, racist or obscene remarks
29. Don't forward virus hoaxes and chain letters
30. Keep your language gender neutral
31. Don't reply to spam
32. Use cc: field sparingly
While I thought these rules were needed there are some that stood out more than others to me. For instance I thought it was interesting that one of the rules was (23) Do not use email to discuss confidential information. I probably would have done this without realizing the problem with it but it’s not difficult for someone to hack into your email therefore all the confident information could be surrendered.
I also thought number 30 was interesting. Keep your language gender neutral. That is sometimes difficult for me and I’m sure for others because we have a very specific way we use our speech. If we don’t catch those we can create serious problems though. I think this is an important rule to keep in mind.

I picked up some rules on netequitte from,
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html
Rule 1: Remember the Human
Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life
Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace
Rule 4: Respect other people's time and bandwidth
Rule 5: Make yourself look good online
Rule 6: Share expert knowledge
Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control
Rule 8: Respect other people's privacy
Rule 9: Don't abuse your power
Rule 10: Be forgiving of other people's mistakes
Like the email etiquette site I found valuable information in these rules as well. I think what I have witnessed as most common rule to break is Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life. Since people do not have face to face interaction they feel they can get away with a lot more and generally kind people in person turn ruthless through the web because they forget that their correspondences are human and have feelings as well.
Another rule I thought was interesting though is Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control. I thought this was interesting because this rule actually encourages you to almost respectfully debate. It’s difficult to find and keep the balance of debating and being kind to other people who’s opinions you do not agree with.

Overall I think most of these rules are pretty basic and users keep them just from using common sense but there are a few rules that I had not considered before and will be sure to become more aware of.

"United Breaks Guitars"

Dave Carroll is a musician whose guitar was broken by baggage handlers from United Airlines while he was traveling to Nebraska for a week tour. United Airlines didn’t deny it was their fault for the broken guitar and for months Carroll tried to get them to compensate for the damages. After being told no time and time again Carroll promised the last person he talked to that he would write and produce three songs about his experiences with United Airlines for anyone to see. Since nothing was done to correct the issue Carroll wrote a song and within days the video flew across the web. Millions of people have seen the first video and the second recently has been released. Carroll still has one song left to produce.
It appears that since Carroll’s song and music video have been brought to the attention of millions of people, United Airlines stock plummeted and they lost around $180 million. The “United Breaks Guitars” music video could have definitely had a tremendous impact on people’s reactions and responses to United Airlines but there are also other factors that could play into the loss of so much stock. United Airline’s stock had been in a downturn for a while now just like other airline stock regardless of what was happening with Carroll’s situation.
After Carroll’s first video received a lot of publicity and United Airlines received much criticism for the way they handled the situation, United Airlines decided they need to react in a more positive manner. They called Carroll and told him they would like to give him $3000 to compensate for the guitar. At this point Carroll wasn’t looking for compensation so he declined and asked that they give the money to charity and let everyone know where that money went.
I think one of the most amazing things about this situation is how something that seemed so small to an organization can explode into something they should be very concerned with because of social media. With the ability to communicate so efficiently across the globe, companies should be more concerned with customer service and making sure they present themselves in more of a positive manner. I don’t think Carroll will be the only person who is able to make a difference and have such an influence through social media.
I really respected the way Carroll told his story. It was very unique and I feel like he was sincere about the message he was trying to get across. Someone having gone through a nine month ordeal just trying to get justice could have exaggerated more on how bad the customer service was for United Airlines. For instance, he could have made the customer service representatives seem like they were more malicious or ditzy. He seemed to say what he wanted to without being a jerk.
When Carroll made the announcement that United Airlines has contacted him he also was sure to tell the fans to be nicer to Ms. Irlwig from the video. He wanted them to cut her some slack because she was just trying to do her job to the best of her ability. In the second video he also made it seem like there were no hard feelings and that hopefully eventually they would be able to share a laugh about the whole situation.
I’m curious to see after the next video what United Airline’s response will be. They could ignore it and hope that things will settle eventually, they could change some of their policies or they could make a public apology to Carroll for the entire situation. With the reactions that Carroll has received from his video I find it a bit strange that the only thing they have done is offer him the money for his guitar late. Something as large as this should not be settled on that small of a scale. Changes need to be made.
One more thing I found interesting about this ordeal is that Carroll and his group “Sons of Maxwell,” have received so much publicity that this will change their lives. It has boosted their careers worldwide. Using and singing about Taylor guitars has also provided a lot of advertising for Taylor guitars. This is a completely different way of advertising than I have thought about before. I wonder what influence it will have on marketing and if in the future social media will even more so be a large marketing tool .

Brady,
I am so glad you have shown an interest in learning about public relations. You first of all probably want to know what PR is. Those practicing public relations attempt to promote a good image for a person or group of people who want public attention. This promotion is done by public speaking, planning events, writing, editing and of course through social media. Often the writing involved in PR is a press release, which you I’m sure have come across many times. A press release is what you hear or read when a new product has come out or an announcement is made. There are a lot of job opportunities in the PR industry. PR branches out and ranges from client management, writers, media specialists, trainers, researchers and event planners.
As I am sure you could guess the career I want in public relations is event planning. Having experience through many student government and leadership positions event planning just seems to come so naturally to me. In event planning, like every other career in public relations, it is essential to create a good network. Often whether or not you get hired can depend on what network of people you are associated with and what connections you have that can benefit the company.
If you decide to get involved with public relations it’s a good idea to become familiar with all types of PR. Now more than ever they are all blending together and it’s becoming essential to gain a background throughout the industry. Many PR agents are actually working side by side with marketing and advertising now.
One of the most influential things in PR right now is social media. Social media are networking programs such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. The public through these networks help companies to reform and better understand their customers. Social media also helps in PR when an important message needs to get out. For instance the universities in Utah were having budget cuts by the state government and were losing 19% of their previous budget. People used Facebook to create a group called, “Save Higher Education”. Within days the group exploded with people interested in helping. Protests were arranged, petitions signed and possibilities were discussed on what to do about this issue. You should get the idea now how influential social media can be in public relations.
Well Brady, I hope I was able to get you started in learning more about public relations. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer. I hope everything is going well for you and I will talk to you soon.
